Challenge: One area which is often neglected is the back office operations. Poorly maintained inventory is every retailer’s nightmare. The company’s sales were declining every year, and they had the wrong inventory in their stores (shortages in some stores and overages in others where the merchandise was not going to sell).Supply chains need to be optimized in order to increase operational efficiency.

Solution: Predictive analytics helps answer questions such as what to store, when to store, and what and when to discard. Stocking up on slow moving products or running out of popular ones are both problems. Such insights optimize performance and reduce costs. We used predictive analytics and machine learning methods to forecast the sales of every product in every store more accurately. We then leveraged these more accurate forecasts to build a system that recommended transferring units of specific products from stores where they had a low probability of selling to stores where they had a much higher probability of selling.
